Determining best size for pagefile.sys
If the page has been modified, it needs to write it to the page file. Thus the recommendation that the pagefile be at least the size of physical RAM is reasonable - the operating system can do a 1-to-1 mapping and quick referencing of physical pages directly into the file. You're mixing up several different things

There is a general "Rule" that the Pagefile should be 1.5 times physical RAM. However, the base size needs to equal Physical RAM to do a Full Memory dump. Should you normalize your your pagefile (ie set the upper and lower bound the same)? Should all or part of it be on another spindle (hard drive) - NOT partition? Where do you stand on the Fragmentation issue and why? Well, I would say normalize and if you feel like it do the spindle thing too.

size page file is optimum then? One whose minimum is slightly larger than the biggest that it ever needs to be, with the user's program load. The performance gain is achieved by the hard drive heads not having to move to many different locations on the hard drive platters to gather the pieces of a file when it's accessed.
